Hiking in and around St. Anton am Arlberg

On the 300-kilometer network of hiking trails in St. Anton am Arlberg, the Tyrolean Alps are open to holidaymakers for long walks in the healing mountain air. Experienced people move on cross-border serpentines, nature lovers marvel at the “burning” slopes on the Rendl and those who are curious about it sharpen their senses on Senn’s WunderWanderWeg. Those who prefer to be accompanied by someone can join a guided tour of the St. Anton am Arlberg mountain hiking school (free of charge with the summer card).
Always and for everyone

For example, the Mutspuren panorama trail on the Galzig at around 2,000 meters can be easily reached by mountain railway. There families get to know the history of the Arlberg region in a lovingly staged adventure world. Under the motto “Faith and History”, a circular route in Schnann deals with the Swabian children, alpine farming or the “Golden City”. In the St. Anton district of St. Jakob, pilgrims can experience the eventful past of the former Gand mining industry for the first time on a 750 meter long circular hiking trail from June 2019. The famous Way of St. James also crosses St. Anton am Arlberg: the Arlberg Hospiz Hotel in St. Christoph, steeped in history, provided shelter and lodging to pilgrims traveling in the 14th century - the door is still open to them today. At the same time, the Adlerweg, Tyrol's most spectacular long-distance hiking route, begins (or ends) there. It currently leads about 300 kilometers (24 stages) through the Karwendel and Rofan mountains to St. Johann am Wilden Kaiser over peaks, shelters, mountain lakes and flower meadows.

The mountain is “burning” on the Alpenrosenweg

On the Rendl slopes south of St. Anton am Arlberg, hikers will find a “red sea”, especially in June and July. The reason is the many alpine roses blooming there, which give the impression of a floral fire. The path starts behind the Rendlbahn mountain station (accessible on foot or by gondola) with a playground and the best view of the Lechtal Alps and the Verwall group. Then the Rendlalm lures you to strengthen yourself, experienced tourers extend the circuit up to the Zwölferkopf (2,558 meters).

Feast and be amazed on the Stöcklweg in Pettneu

The forest and meadow tour extends from Pettneu am Arlberg to the Nessler Alm, where goats, chickens, pigs and 60 cows live. The Stöcklweg leads over 7.5 kilometers (414 meters in altitude) past Gridlonbach, Pleißereck and the old Nessler Alm. Time seems to have stood still in the in-house museum: historical copper kettles, butter troughs and dairy equipment testify to the history of the Stanzertal, which goes back to the 12th century. After a hearty snack or the house specialty spinach and cheese dumplings in the new Nessler Alm next door, holidaymakers make a pilgrimage back over the Kalvarienberg, known as a place of contemplation, including the listed chapel.

Berggeistweg between Tyrol and Vorarlberg

In the St. Anton district of St. Christoph, the cross-border ascent to the Kaltenberghütte begins at the level of the Arlberg Pass. Behind the Gasthof Valluga, hikers then stroll over the Berggeistweg and its serpentines, over Almmatten and the Maroiseen to the stop in Vorarlberg. At the junction between Klostertal and Verwall is the mountain restaurant with its characteristic red shutters and the best view of the surrounding mountains. Return via the Paul-Bantlin-Weg past the Albona lakes, a total of 15 kilometers and 675 meters of altitude to be mastered.

Senn’s WunderWanderWeg for all the senses

Hiking with all your senses is the motto on Senn‘s WunderWanderWeg above St. Anton am Arlberg. The adventure trail, which is particularly suitable for children, begins at Lake Maiensee near St. Christoph. Around the Sennhütte, families will find the alpine flower and herb trail with around a thousand plants to smell, touch, taste and marvel at, including the largest edelweiss in the Alps with over 100,000 flowers. The weekly program of the Sennhütte includes “baking herbal bread” and “healthy Kneipp”. The 8th Arlberg Herb Festival will also take place there on August 15, 2019.
